We tend to think the issue of public communication largely in terms of information media, including the press, but actually the receiving environment of media, as in the case of residence system like the apartment, can be more important. Even so, we have been indifferent to think the question of residence in relation to public communication, because of the strict specialization system of our academic discipline. If the field of communication history research, which has mainly dealt with information media, includes the macroscopic perspective of media ecology, all media in a broad sense can be research topics. This change is required in order to find a new vision in the communication research which shows the repetition of research topics. Based on such judgment, this essay explores the influence of the apartment on public communication. In Korea, the media function of the apartment can be dassified as the followings: 1) diffusion of Fordistic efficiency, 2) weakening of community consciousness, 3) strengthening of status distinction, 4) lurching and instability of public opinion, 5) change of community into interest group. This paper deals with such media functions through an interpretive analysis that incorporates the Korean history of apartment for a half century.

영문초록

우리는 공공커뮤니케이션의 문제를 주로 언론 등 정보미디어 중심으로만 생각하는 경향이 있는데, 실은 미디어의 수용환경, 즉 아파트 같은 거주 체제가 훨씬 더 중요할 수 있다. 그럼에도 우리는 엄격한 학문 분업체제로 인해 주(住)의 문제를 커뮤니케이션과 연결시켜 생각하는 데에 대해 비교적 무관심했다. 그간 연구 대상을 주로 정보미디어에 국한시켜 온 언론사ㆍ커뮤니케이션사 연구가 ‘미디어 생태학’의 거시적 관점을 포용한다면, 보든 광의의 미디어가 언론사ㆍ커뮤니케이션사의 연구 주제가 될 수 있다. 이는 연구 소재의 중복이 심하게 나타나고 있는 언론ㆍ커뮤니케이션학의 새로운 비전을 위해서도 요청되는 일이라 아니 할 수 없다. 본 연구는 그런 문제의식하에 아파트가 공공커뮤니케이션과 공동체 문화에 미친 영향을 탐구한다. 한국에서 아파트의 미디어 기능은 1) 포드주의적 효율성 전파, 2) 공동체 의식 약화, 3) 지위 구별짓기 강화, 4) 여론의 쏠림과 불안정, 5) 공동체의 이익집단화 등 5가지로 나누어 생각해볼 수 있다. 본 연구는 반세기에 걸친 한국 아파트의 역사를 살펴보면서 위와 같은 5가지 기능을 역사적 사례를 들어 분석ㆍ해석한다
